La acción transcurre en un pueblo llamado Tostes. Origen pequeño, burgués y rural de Charles Bovary. Lugar donde Charles vive su infancia y es influenciado por su madre en temperamento y educación. Charles se recibe a fuerza de empeño como médico y su madre le casa con la viuda Heloise, de aparente buena dote. Conoce a Emma Rouault, hija de un paciente, de la que prontamente se enamora. La mujer de Charles muere súbitamente y Charles a instancias del padre de Emma se casa con ella en medio de una exuberante fiesta campestre. Al poco tiempo son invitados a una fiesta de la alta sociedad en donde Emma puede comparar ese estilo de vida que siempre habia querido con el que tiene.
